Speedo wobble on Citroen ZX

Does anyone know the cure to stop my ZX speedo needle wobbling? Could it be a duff cable? It's on a ZX Reflex 1.9D.

Does it only do it on braking? Could be a warped brake disc... ;-)

Generally speaking, wobble in a gauge like that is to to ineffective or failed damping within the gauge itself.

OFFS. "...is *due* to ineffective or..."

The message from Tunku contains these words:

Is it better at speed and then very jerky when slower? If so it's almost certainly the cable about to give up. If it's stiff or frayed it'll move at the bottom, winding up the cable until it suddenly spins round at the top - then repeats the whole thing.

Replacing the cable on my 205 Diesel made the speedo action all nice and smooth again. Before the cable actually broke it was very jumpy indeed.

We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold. I remember Tunku saying something like:

Assuming it's not an electronic speedo... almost certainly a duff cable. You could try taking the cable out and oiling it with 3in1 oil, but wipe the top 6" free of loose oil before putting it back in.

*Ding to self - It is a cable drive innit. It's probably done what it says on the speedo, 138,000 miles. I was thinking electric, even knowing it was a cable. What a divot. I've had bike cables do this FFS. Apologies to all respondants, I'm having a major brain fart. Cable lubrication, then a new cable. Heh.
