Stalling when steering

Car is a Rover 820 Vitesse 1993.

When i press the accelerator and let go, the needle drops to 500rpm then works its way back up to idle speed (about 800rpm) is this normal?

Anyway, at night time with lights on and steering at the same time, the car stalls (at parking speeds). Even if it's just not moving, and the lights are on, if i move the steering wheel, the car stalls. Is my power steering pump knackered? When on full lock, the power steering doesn't function for about

1/8th of a turn as i begin to turn it back, like it's going too far on lock. Confused and scared really - please help, i was changing down at the bottom of a hill going over a bridge and it happend as lights were on, needle dropped to idle whilst i was gear changing, i was steering = stall. Anchoring on was difficult as stalled engine meant no brake servo :(

I'm wondering > Steering rack? PAS Pump? Stepper motor? Don't know what to do, no money left now as the car was in an accident where a car ran into the wing of mine and i had to replace the suspension on the drivers side, the insurance case is taking ages. Could this have knackered the steering rack?

If it helps, it has Rover MEMS 1.6 and it also has another computer under the passenger seat.

It sounds like the rack is bent. Did you have the car professionally appraised after the accident?

Sounds like it might have 2 separate problems. A mechanical one with the steering, and another with the idle speed. I'm not familiar with the Rover 800 series setup. But, the steering maybe sticky due to a physically damaged rack, but that shouldn't affect the idle speed, enough to stall the engine. That sounds more like a fault with the electronics controlling the idle speed. Maybe a sensor, damaged wiring etc. Mike.

I'm not famillier with the Rover engine but the issue of the revs dropping of then picking up again you might like to try two things (in this order).

1) Get some carb cleaner and clean the accumulated gunge off the throttle plate. On the Injection Sierras this can produce the symptoms you describe. 2) If (1) doesn't cure it you could try increasing the base idle speed slightly. The manual should show you how, but its probably a small by-pass screw somewhere, near or inside the throttle body. Only increase it in small amounts then take it out and see how it performs. Another way is to disconnect the wiring to the idle valve then increase the base idle speed until the engine can just keep itself ticking over. Reconnecting the idle valve should bring it back to its correct idle speed and then test it on the road again. Try and avoid increasing the base idle too much or you might find it "races" sometimes when sitting in traffic (which can be a tad embarrassing !).
