Starting issues

Hi,

asking on behalf of a friend, she has a 2.8 bmw petrol not sure of year. Basically the battery is reading over 12v, it has a secondhand starter in it as the last one was dead. This problem or first of is this starter is not doing anything when I start the key in to the crank position , the lights come on and nothing, no clicking no gurgle no attempt at cranking. (been sat now for about 4 weeks)

Also the engine is a used one which has been dropped in and has been working for 2 months no problems. When it was running no problems at all. Reason for new engine was the head gasket had failed on the old one and worked out cheaper putting in a new engine from a donor car.

But the starting issues are recent.

I'm wondering if its the starter motor, the battery, a relay, a bad earth, fuse ... or maybe even an immobiliser.

They gave the battery an overnight charge just to be sure, and no joy...

Any ideas what might cause this...

forgot to add when it was running near before it conked out it was lumpy, hesitating in all gears, and misfiring.

Hi Duncan,

I'll give that a good check in the morning.

Could the ecu be chucking a wobbly because its a different engine ... or could it be sensor related like the crank sesor one one of the million sensors lurking :)

Well if it was running then tha wouldn't have changed. And wouldn't stop anything that isn't very recent cranking.
