Stiff Steering

The steering on my 94 Fiesta has gone stiff and doesn't centralise itself.

It's as is the tyres are low and it's only been doing it recently.

I've had the steering joint replaced but it's still doing it.

Does anyone have any theories ?

Thanks

John

Most common is the steering uj, next likely is a seized ball joint, the only way to find it is to dismantle.

The U/J is the most likely culprit, oil it externally and it should improve enough to confirm, but this won't be a permanent cure. Only a new one will do that.

Best way is to jack the front end up, get someone to turn it lock to lock, and dribble oil onto it from above.

Is this the same for a K reg Transit (Mid height and SWB) as per my brothers exBT one? I hate driving it as it's so bloody heavy to turn. Am I a weaking too used to power steering?

The thing seems to be a fight to turn both into corners and to straighten back up again.

Almost certainly, and if not, it won't hurt to give it some oil. They are lubed for life, but the life can be extended.

The JU series which became sherpa which became LDV have always been plagued by this. I've got an LDV now and I dribble oil on every time I've got the bonnet up. Messy, but who cares?

Incidentally this is not a substitute for keeping tyres inflated and checking the steering and suspension for worn joints etc. Just before the flames start.
