strange indicator activity - Golf mk 3

Hi all,

I've recently noticed a problem on my Golf Mk 3 '94's indicators. They generally work fine, but sometimes after indicating, they just stop - and this is not about the stalk cancelling itself, its still in the indicate position. I spent a few minutes scratching my head over this, this afternoon, and noticed that the foglight indication lamp glows in time with the indicators, (when they are working). And also comes on when I use the brakes or select reverse.

Does this sound like something weird going on in one of the rear light clusters?

Any thoughts?

Cheers.

to cause the fog light switch glow you probably have an earth fault in the rear lights, or you have an incorrect bulb in.

faulty or dirty hazard switch is the likely fault for the indicators stopping

I have a similar problem with a Renault Megane, but the side light and/or the brake light indicates instead of the indicator. I also notice the handbrake dashboard light dimly flashing at the same time. I had the problem with another car a few years ago and it was water getting into the cluster. This time though there's no water and I haven't a clue what it is so I'd be interested if you sort it out. Phil

Its 'earthing out' across the circuitry, try cleaning the connections on the lamp unit

Thanks for the replies.

I don't think it can be an incorrect bulb, because they've been fine for ages, and have not been changed. After work today I sat in the boot and pulled out the light units, giving everything a good waggle about. No real change. I then pulled out the main connector from the nearside unit, replaced it and tried again. The fog light indicator below the headlight switch is now considerably less than it was, so possibly I'm on the right track. The units themselves were quite dry and appeared (to me) to be generally okay.

Sounds like a bad earth. Get a lenght of wire and connect it directly to the base of one of the bulbs and then on to a good earth point and see if this makes any difference.

Try adding an earth wire, direct from the track to a clean bit of metal somewhere near.

Previously good bulbs can give aggro, sometimes the filaments short to each other, not common, but hard to find if it happens!

Somebody wanted to know if this was resolved.

Yup, hopefully fixed. I spent sometime sitting in my boot with the rear light clusters pulled out, changing one lamp at a time and then seeing if the fog light indicator still came on. This didn't suggest anything (to me) so finally I tried pulling out all the connectors on the near side cluster (3) and replacing them, that is putting the same connectors back into place after speaking the spell of vehicle recovery in a soft and nurturing voice. There's a big, a medium, and a small connector. The small one only has one connection in it, and I think I fitted it back rotated

180. Anyway, messing with the connectors seemed to do the trick.

Hope that maybe helpful.

Thanks for all the comments.
