Stuck handbrake

Hi,

I don't know if anybody can help but I have the classic problem of the stuck handbrake on my car. My car is an 1993 Hyundai Elantra and now, it just won't move. I'm pretty sure this happened because I had left my car in my parking during 4 months without using it (this was during this last summer so I'm sure that the handbrake is not stuck because of the cold). The handbrake was not on (I have a manual car and I was in 1st gear) but my mechanic told me that my handbrake would be likely to stuck if I would use it (I think the handbrake wire was getting rusty or something). After 4 months, the handbrake lever won't move at all, even tough it's pulled down. I wonder now if there is anything I can do to get my car moving apart from towing it to the nearest mechanic.

Thank you for your help!

jack it up (safely) take each wheel off in turn and give the drum a whack with an hammer, then put in two wheel nuts and turn it using a lever, do this with both sides. Hope this helps.

If the handbrake is stuck ON, then for scrap-type cars which have been sitting around for a number of months I find putting a lot of power on then engaging reverse usually unsticks handbrakes. You may be feeling more sympathetic towards towards your clutch however!

Yeah, I knackered a clutch doing that once.

The next time I just belted the back wheels with a big hammer, which did the trick, though some people seem to think this is not an appropriate thing to do...
