"stupid"? rear view mirror device on sale via QVC

Tonight on TV, QVC featured a highly-praised (by QVC) rear view mirror that was able to display information from a mobile phone on it! The projected image totally obscured that area of the mirror needed to display itself. In other words it was not "see though". I consider this a completely stupid invention. There is nothing to stop the projected image popping up to obscure part of the mirror image during some critical moment during driving. It should be made illegal I think. Do you agree? Disagree? Why?

Of the three mirrors I use in the car, the middle-of-the-windscreen one is the least useful.

I guess that whatever is sold there will be many people who habitually use the mobile whilst driving. It particularly irritates me when I see owners of up-market cars driving with a phone to their ear. The chances are that the car has a "hands-free" option, they could afford to buy one, they don't need to be saying 'look at me I've got a mobile whilst driving a Porsche Cayenne and they have more to loose if they have an attributed accident.

It's probably huge. My car gives the speed on the windscreen and can be changed to show any other info such as a mobile name or number that is coming in. That is a see through display.

So you mean you have a "heads up" display on your car windscreen? What car is that?

Anyone remember an episode of "Tomorrow's World" where they fitted a Jaguar with infra-red headlights and the result was displayed on a similar thing IIRC (must have been about 15 years ago) - whatever happened to that idea?

Agree 100%. I can drive my large vehicles perfectly safely without a rear view mirror. To be honest, when I get back in a vehicle that has a rearview mirror, I find the side mirrors far more useful. However, I do realise many car drivers rarely use their door mirrors, especially the nearside one.

And here's the one the OP was talking about

Ellie's old man used to be convinced that that mirror was for the passenger's use - and would adjust it for himself whenever he got in the car...

The number of cars you see driving along with the door mirrors folded in

- - still, at least it's advance warning that they're a clueless numpty.

Ah right, so it is a mirror. When he said you couldn't see through it I thought that was the purpose of a mirror. If you could see through it, it would be window.

You know how some signs of f*ckwittery annoy people more than others? Mirrors folded in just shouts, "I can't be bothered to see if my car still has wheels" at me. These chumps to be avoided at all costs.

Haven't you ever folded them back for some reason (car wash, perhaps? - knowing you, probably not for that reason, anyway!) - and only noticed when you're 100 yards down the road with nowhere to pull in and sort them out?

No.

However, all your cars are so narrow you probably never need to fold 'em....

The one thing the Passat needed was power folding - those things are too bloody wide.

As an aside - don't bid on any Passats from Westbury Autions next week as we have a few going through ;-)

Well, no, it's more a warning to everyone..... mine and my female classic-car rallying colleague are having ours taken to auction tomorrow.

I think you can imagine how they've been driven ;-)

Indeed. I s'pose their survival actually bears strong testament...

Not really, it's a result of the VW warranty and a 'fully maintained' lease package.
