Hi. Do all post offices sell tax disks if you show them a 24 hour thrid party insurance policy?

Thanks.

provided it is a post office that sells tax discs and the cert. of ins. is valid for the day the disc is issued, yes (and of course you have the other necessary bits like mot.)

"Now as Arthur 51 is apparently *trying* to hide his ISP by posting through google:

inetnum: 150.204.0.0 - 150.204.255.255 netname: LIVPOL descr: Liverpool John Moores University country: GB admin-c: JC224-RIPE tech-c: JC224-RIPE status: ASSIGNED PI mnt-by: JANET-HOSTMASTER source: RIPE # Filtered"

the request smacks of a scam that is rife with the youngsters (and a few oldies as well) around my local area!

When the car is due to be taxed, the owner nips down to the local car insurance brokers and *insures* the car by using monthly instalments and pays the (usually cheap) deposit - and is given a temporary Insurance Cover Note by the broker (which can be valid for up to 14 days IIRC).

The owner then nips over to the local post office, buys the road tax - and then pops back to the broker to cancel the insurance that he/she has just arranged - or never pays the first monthly instalment and the cover lapses.

This then leaves the car uninsured for the next year, and the owner well in pocket financially - until he has a crash or is stopped by the police.

Yes, it is legal to tax a car using a Temporary Cover note.

ANPR is becoming more widespread all the time - lots of Police vehicles have it on full time...

Can't use OE on my desk pc's I've just completed 20 years of service with my esteemed employer. A psychology degree may help you overcome your paranoia.

Dunno, but it worked for me.

I don't need a degree in "psychology" Arthur to spot a potential scam from a mile off!

As for "paranoia" - there is no need for me to be paranoid, unless you are to be the second, uninsured b*****d to run into my car and write it off!

Would you be so kind then as to explain why you are taxing a car on a "24 hour thrid party insurance policy", [1] which seems rather pointless - especially as the vehicle has to be insured at all times when on a public highway?

[1] Which in all my years of driving, I have never seen BTW - very time I have a temporary cover note, it's always for 14 days.

For those within this group who may know a lot more than I do on the subject: *is* *there* such a document as a "24 hour, Third Party Insurance Policy"? I would be interesting to know.

I'm sure that I heard or read somewhere that "cover notes" are no longer issued, to eradicate the myth that there was a period of grace for 15 days at renewal time? ICBW.

I got a 14 day cover note sent from More Than when insured my new motor a couple of weeks ago. They sent the full policy docs once the first payment had been taken.

Perhaps it only relates to renewals? Or only applies to Zurich, my insurers? I suppose there has to be some documentation for new policies at least.

I'm sure the OP can explain, but one example might be to tax a car so you can sell it. So you can legally have someone test drive it, you need MOT, tax and insurance. The insurance will be on their 'drive other cars' cover, but you need to tax it first for that to be legal. So you could buy insurance for a day, tax the car, then you have a car with tax and MOT ready for someone to test drive. If the car lives on your drive, the only time it'll be on the public road is for the test drive, so you have no need of other insurance.

It would appear you are on the 1st year LLB (Law Degree) Course and asking for help with your "homework". Why not try using the IOLIS CD or the online help in the JMU Library? There are plenty of resources you can use. Stop being lazy!

What's wrong with being lazy? If you cross reference what you've been told you can save a hell of a lot of time.
