This Bloody Escort

Hey Again Group,

Escort 1.4i (Single Point) 1994

Well i spent a good afternoon yestarday under my bonnet, i`ve done a full service (Oil, Plugs, HT Leads, Cam Belt, Filter). I changed my Temp Sensor and Thermostat (Both Knacked) Now i notice my temp going to 3 o`clock now:) (12 till 6 Gauge)

Seems to run miles smother aswell - with a noticable increase in power:)

One thing now tho, when I rev my Engine, take my foot of it revs at about

2,200rpm for about ten seconds then drops to about 900? revs it again to about 5,000rpm, take my foot of an it drops to 2,200rpm for about ten seconds then drops down to 900 again. Any Ideas why or what this could be? I checked the TPS and its giving my about 0.56v and 4.23 on WOT.

Also I noticed when I was swapping my Temp Sensor (The small little one with a single wire) there was another one to the right which was a lot bigger, with two wires connected, which look like there going to the fan. It this also a temp sensor? The reason I ask is my Car was Sat and the Temp went to Red but my fan didn`t kick in:(

Ta and Many Thanks MCN

that sounds like the fan switch, wires will be quite thick, pull the plug off bridge the two wires with a pair of tweezers or bit of wire and turn on the ign, if it still doesn't work the fan you should first check the fan fuse, also check the fan still turns, it is rare for the fan motor to fail without being seized. If it does work with this test then the switch has died.

That sounds like a slightly overactive emissions control, they normally only do it for at most about 2 seconds

Right, firstly your idle hang is probably caused by a too high TPS voltage at ide- try reducing this down to 0.5v or so and see if it will drop to low idle faster.

The temp sensor you replaced works the gauge *only*- the one for the ECU is under the inlet manifold at the back of the head between cylinders 2 and 3.

The large unit with the 2 wires is indeed the fan switch and it sounds like yours is broken, as the fan should kick in when the gauge is approximately at the 2pm position (or when the coolant is boiling in the expansion bottle!)

You should find your TPS is of the slotted mounting hole variety. Loosen the two screws with igntion on and DVM connected between pin 2 and a good earth and rotate the TPS to the desired voltage.

Idle voltage on the SPI should be between 0.6v and 0.8v

Below 0.6 will give a slow drop to idle, above 0.8 will give a rapid drop to idle (probably will cause stalling)

Set it midway at 0.7v

Other way around mate- seeing as WOT = 4.5v.
