Trying to find engine number series for Rover K16 (Head Gasket)

Hi,

I've had a good search through newgroups and Google, but can't find an answer.

My brother in law (who admits to having no mechanical back ground) is having a less than happy time with his Rover 214 (hatch).

Originally he had the old head gasket go and put it into the only local garage that would honour his warranty. After much mucking about, gets the car back. The original engine was "too far gone" so one from a breaker was fitted. It failed its MOT last month and the emissions were "off the scale". He had a new ECU and Oxygen (?) sensor fitted. Still no joy, and the car smells very strongly of petrol.

He believes that the garage (who it turns out has a poor reputation)fitted an 1100cc engine. Now I can't find any trace of a

1.1litre engine, just 1.4 and upwards.

Before he goes back to the garage he needs more facts, so leaving that aspect aside,

1)Is there a 1.1 (1.2?) engine that goes straight into a 1.4 car?

2)To check the engines, where is the engine number located and what are the series for the 1.1 (?) 1.4, 1.6 and 1.8?

Cheers,

Sean

The new bubble shape 200/25 came as a 1.1, but I don't suppose they sold many of them.

Seems he specialises in paying for rip off work? Why was the ECU and oxygen sensor changed if it didn't cure the problem?

The Metro used a 1.1 litre version of the K Series which I suppose might fit, but how compatible it would be with the existing fuelling arrangements I've no idea. But I'd guess not. Even if it was, I'd expect the performance to be a bit of a giveaway after a 1.4.

He's going back to the same garage? Does he enjoy being ripped off? I'd be straight down the small claims court since the car is now beyond economical repair, and use the money won to get a decent secondhand one.
