Urgent advice needed - Jag XJ6 - N Reg.

Bro'-in'-law has just travelled from Coventry to S. Wales (Gower) towing a trailer and camping equipment. Journey passed without events.

Arrived on campsite - everything normal - and turned off engine to book-in.

Upon re-starting the engine to drive to allotted pitch, it's making a helluva noise - sounds like tin cans being dragged along the ground!

No loss of oil. No loss of coolant. Enough fuel (half full). No warnings on the dash. Both camshafts are turning and the engine "tries to fire".

He'll prolly have to get it recovered - but any thoughts anyone?

I can't determine from your post if the engine is running or not, but I had an auto Granada once which made a similar noise - it turned out the torque converter driveplate was shearing off it's boss and scraping against the engine. Car ran fine like that for several weeks (though noisily) until it eventually gave way and I lost all drive. Also I couldn't restart the engine because the ring gear was on the outer edge of the driveplate and that was no longer connected to the crankshaft!
