Used car servicing

I guess this is sort of the right place to ask (sorry if it's not).

Currently I have a '94 1.7TD Cav, 131k on the clock. It's pretty much all I need in a car, economical even round town, comfy enough on longer journeys, lots of boot space.

However, I do a miniscule amount of mileage (under 8k a year) and even though I do expect it to increase, I'm unlikely to ever do more than

10k. My problem is, I'm finding the Cav is really costing too much to keep on the road - the Isuzu engine parts I've had replaced (starter motor, ring gear and alternator) have been horrifically expensive and I don't have the facilities (or strength!) to do the work myself.

So, I'm looking to replace it, and up along with the "must have a minimum offset in the driving position, and be able to carry 4 people with boot space for a folding wheel chair" is "parts must be cheap and easy to obtain" - which is why I'm asking here.

What sort of thing can I look for that that would fit the bill (and can I get for around two grand)? While I think it might be easier to go back to petrol, I've no problem with staying diesel if the costs will be reasonable. At the moment I'm finding it hard to see past a Mondeo hatch.

If you are having difficulty keeping up with your Vauxhall costs then you would never afford the Mondeo !!

At your budget level you probably already have about as good as it gets.

Personally I find that Japanese cars are the cheapest on running costs, and I try to move people onto Toyota/Lexus.

that would almost suggest that vauxhalls were more reliable than fords

Toyota Carina/Avensis must be a good bet there. So reliable it's boring!

Hmm the 1.7 TDs are definitely an exception to that rule.

If your looking for cheap and reliable motoring then I don't think you can beat Nissan. The Primera's are plentiful on the second hand market around the 2K mark and the servicing is ridiculously cheap at the main dealers. The most expensive service I ever had on mine was 130 quid for a full service which was everything except the cambelt. I always found it economical too as its a fairly lightweight car. The only other car to equal build quality and reliability that I have owned was a Mitsubishi Galant but the main dealer servicing costs were very expensive so for the last year or two I had it serviced by a local garage. It was a beautiful car although not as economical as the Primera. Hope that helps. Gareth
