Vauxhall vectra engine management light

My 1999 Vectra 1.6 has started to jerk during town driving. It was serviced 2 weeks ago, after which the problem occured. It has been in at the main dealer, who did a diagnostic check using Tech 2. No codes were produced during the test. The car does not stall, but mis-fires/jerks. The engine management light blinks, but does not stay on. On the motorway, there is no problem at all. As soon as you leave the motorway, the problem starts. The problem is intermittant. The dealer states that they can't do anything unless they can get a code from the engine management. Any suggestions?

Usual cause of problems such as these is a sticking EGR valve.

If the dealer was really trying to sort the problem for you, they could go for a drive in the car with Tech2 connected and in 'Snapshot' mode. As soon as any problem occured, engine parameters before, during and after the problem are recorded and can be analysed.

Check your timing belt tension *immediately* This is the most likely cause.

Under slow speeds in a low gear when you go from power to the over-run, if the belt is slack, the slack goes from one side of the belt to the other, the cams move relative to the crank, and the ECU lights the light cos it sees that signals from its CAS and CPS go out of their operating window. When it does this it also goes into limp mode.

If that's the case, why isn't it storing a fault in the ECU?
