Have just bought a VW Golf 1.6 S petrol on a 51 plate with 40,000 miles on the clock, does anyone know at what point i should get the cam belt changed and how much this should cost? Cheers Wayne

Now would be a good time. Cost will vary depending on garage and where you live. £100 ~ £150 I would reckon.

Indeed now- especially if this is the 16v engine- they are well known to have belt chewing/shedding issues becuase of failure of the plastic tensioner rollers. The new rollers are metal.
