VW Golf Mk4 - Ignition Key Battery

I have an S reg MK4 VW Golf, one of the first to be registered.

I am wondering about the battery in the ignition key used for locking and setting the alarm. I think the operational range between me and the car is reducing which might point to the battery going flat. The key is one where you press a button and the key swings out from the side of the fob.

Is the key easy to open and can I replace the battery myself? Will any of the codes be lost if I do this?

Thanks for any info.

If yopu have a flat blade screwdriver or long finger nails you can pry it open around the mid section and it will pop open and you'll see the battery and then it just a case of replacing it.

Sorry to follow up on my own posting but just to add that there were two batteries (type CR1620) in my VW (British) key.

On my car you only get a couple of minutes to change the battery before codes are lost - so don't take the battery out and take that to the shop as a pattern.

Unless you're sitting outside the shop :)
