VW sharan key woes

Apologies chap if I'm asking this in the wrong place, I normally post here for my mk4 golf. Basically I have a 2000 sharan and 2 keys. One key works fine but the other had a new battery in but it won't open close or start the car.

I'm guessing the key is now dead and I need a new one. I called VW who quote me £240!!! for one key I said no thanks lol.

Any advice welcomed on what to do.

Always worth opening up and very careful examination with an eye glass for dry joints.

Most high street key shops do these now. Much cheaper than OEM

When I got my new VW T5 van, I was told to use both keys in a 2 monthly 'cycle'. Apparently the vehicle will 'forget' the key which isn't used for any lengthy period. The key may still be ok, but the vehicle sysytem needs to 'relearn' the key. May be a case of RTFM? ;>) Could be totally different on yours but hey...

The opening/closing and the starting are 2 different things. The first can be recoded if you have another key: the procedure is in the manual. Starting the car depends on it being coded to the immobiliser, but the battery plays no part in this. If you have the SKC (on a plastic tag with the original keys) it can be done with VCDS. Otherwise you need VAG-Tacho to read the SKC from the immobiliser, or to go to the dealer and they get the SKC via an online connection to the factory.

Find a good local VW specialist or auto-locksmith. I got a (non-remote) key for £90.

Or you need to pair the Key to the ECU, ring round your local non-dealership VW specialists.

I suspect that in changing the battery you (or whoever) has lost the PATS chip out of the key - based on the fact that Galaxys, Alhambras and sharans are extrememly similer (read almost identical cars built in portugal) this chip is about 8mm x 2mm x3mm black plastic and often gets lost when the key is opened for the abttry to be changed. AS previous posters have said the battery has nothing to do with starting the car - reprogramming the remotte is relatively easy - I can find a link if you need it
