Water pump and cam belt gone on a 1996 Vectra Envoy

My Vectra died on me the other day. Car lost power and the recovery bloke said the water pump had gone. Mechanic has looked at it and suggested that the pump and cam belt needed replacing, then talked about the heads, valves and other parts possibly being done.

Any idea on the possible cost of having this job done? Don't know if it is worth it as the mechanic was talking in the region of =A3500 for parts and labour.

I think that £500 incl labour would be a *very* good deal if it has indeed done a few valves (which is guaranteed if the cambelt has failed).

Cambelt and pump are cheap (~=A350) then there's the fitting (an hour?) but then if the engine doesn't run chances are the head is toast then you're looking at probably a second hand head at unknown cost (maybe =A3100) plus the labour (2-3 hours maybe)

Not that easily, but it does depend upon how carefully you turn it. If you stop turning as soon as you feel a valve touch a piston, it's very unlikely you'll bend a valve. Mike.
