Weird wiper issue.

Missus drives a 2000 1.4 Fabia Classic. This morning, her wiper and washers went wonky. Normally you push away on the stalk to operate the rear on constant and push past that for rear wash, push the stalk down to flick the front wipers, up on the stalk for the various speeds, and toward you to operate the front screen wash and a wiper sweep.

Today however, normal front wiper modes do nothing, rear wipe works but rear wash doesn't, and front wash does nothing.

Very odd that both front wiper motor and washer pump should pack up at the some time. Front and rear wipers are on seperate fuses but they are both intact, but no fuse is listed for the washer pump. She is getting a bit panicy now with the prediction of snow and having no wipers.

Can't find a relay for either the front wiper motor or pump, and can't even find the the motors and pumps as they are hidden away behind panelling that looks like it might need half of the engine pulling out too remove.

Um, given the random failure of various things all controlled by the same stalk, I would suspect the stalk itself.

Might actually well be, considering that a switch operation that is supposed to operate the front, is actually operating the rear, I suppose that might be an option.

In news: snipped-for-privacy@news.individual.net, Elder wittered on forthwith;

VW also have a habit of using the same washer motor for front and rear windows. They just reverse the polarity of the motor.

I'd say "switch" as well. VW column stalks aren't the best, no matter how soft touch they are...

I'd guess switch too, with the other option being the CCM controller (it controls wipers!). You might want to check connections there- it's somewhere above the throttle pedal according to the Haynes.

Could be worth getting a code reader on it anyway perhaps?

And yes, the washer pump is the same for both with direction reversed for front and rear, so all the washers breaking is understandable.

Funnily enough I have a copy of VAGcom an a cable for my Octavia. And she has taken that today due it starting snowing heavily about 5 minutes before she was due out with no wipers. So I have her Fabia to play with before she books it into a garage.
