What is the Maximum towing weight for a 1998 Vauxhall Vectra

Hi

My in-laws have a 98 Vauxhall Vetra 2.0 and they are looking at getting a 2 berth caravan. They though cannot find details of the maximum towing weight.

Does anyone know?

Thanks

The usual rule is that the caravan should not weigh more than 85% of the kerb weight of the car. Very experienced and careful towers might go as far as 100% but it's risky. You can find the kerb weight of the car in the handbook or, failing that, at:

formatting link
which reveals the 85% weight for a 1998 Vectra 2.0 TDi as 1194kgs. Most caravans have the maximum weight (NOT the the MRO - mass in running order) on a plate under the door. Also vital is the downforce on the towball. Ideally this should be 7% of the maximum weight of the caravan. Some cars have a very low limit on this force but the Vectra seem OK. The maximum towing weight quoted by car manufacturers is the weight which can be restarted up a 10% (or 8%) hill and should be ignored unless, of course, it's less than the weight you get from the above.
