Whistling Alternator Belt

Hi,

First of all, the problem with the electric drivers side front window has sorted itself out - now that it's been cold/raining. No doubt it'll come back when the warmer weather appears.

I now have a different problem. When I start the car - 1.9TD Astra - the alternator belt whistles. It's worse these cold mornings as the glow plugs are on for longer. After about a mile all goes quiet, so I'm fairly sure that it's the above belt.

How can I stop it? The belt has been adjusted so that the slack has been taken up. Before this it was screaming at me on start up.

Is it worth giving a quick spray with the WD40? or is this likely to cause me more trouble?

Cheers

Ian

The alternator whistle may just be it's working under load, then again it could be on its way out. Try a new belt. DaveK.

Don't use WD40! It will not work at all!!!!!!!!!!! think about it the belt is slipping so use the opposite of WD40 = talc power

Then again it could be time to replace what must be an old belt.

The belt is probably glazed. Time to replace.

I've had a similar whistle on my Corsa. It turns out that a common Vauxhall fault is the fan belt tensioner wheel (you know...the bit that's supposed to stop the belt sqeualing) develops a squeal itself - the bearings dry out. =A3100 inc vat for the OEM part, I got one from a breakers for =A340....problem solved.

Fair enough, but this is a new belt. Fitted in August - was done as part of the repair when the water pump seized and broke the cam belt :-(

Hi Dave,

Thanks for that - I'd never of thought of it. I'll give it a try - when it stops raining. It is a new belt though.

if it is a conventional v belt then make sure it is the right width for the pulley, I had an Isuzu engined combo van that ate alternator belts every few weeks, it was because the car shop kept supplying the right length belt in the wrong (normal size) width, it needed the extra wide type (power steering belt width), a genuine belt fixed it permanently.
