Why women shouldn't have cars... another reason

A few weeks ago (yes, weeks) my sister emailed to say she had a grinding noise when she braked (Ford Ka). Diagnosis simple, pads worn down to metal.

Today she finally got round to bringing me the car with new discs & pads to fit. And brake fluid. "It's losing fluid" she said. !!!!!!

When I took the wheel off I could see why - it had obviously pushed the piston out past the seal! How? I've never seen a brake disc like it. I measured the minimum thickness with a micrometer at just 4.35mm! Even bikes have thicker discs! I think she was damned lucky the thing didn't shatter.

Seeing is believing, so I've put a picture of the two removed discs at

Scary! Personally, I think women should have to put "W" plates on the front and rear of their cars, similar to "L" plates, so that one can be warned in advance in case one cannot see the driver's face (as it has lippy and mascara applied to it at 35mph)

She needs to take the car back to the garage she bought it from, hand in the keys, and then tell them she is too dippy to own a car.

Bet she wouldn't let her lipstick run down that far without sourcing a replacement.

Perhaps she thought that thin was beautiful.

Thank God this sort of stupidity only applies to women..... unless someone out there knows differently :o)

I know differently.

Male student with a fiat punto that had worn through the pad, the pad backing plate, and was about halfway through the non-piston side of the caliper by the time we seen it!

Also seen a van that threw the pad out, and was using the brake piston as friction material.

oh i do, a customer (bloke) came in with a grinding noise been doing it for months, it got that bad it spat one brake pad out, the other was in the throws of being chucked out but jammed in between the caliper and the alloy wheel, merrily grinding a channel into the wheel, the car was plastered down one side with the ingrained metal filings from the grinding brake pad !

I did that to a Datsun Bluebird I owned for a short while.. although I hasten to add that I did actually fit new calipers and pads to it in that time.

I would have refused to do it and left everything dismantled until she understood how bad it was, perhaps a few months without a car would get her to understand that she was just being a daft bint by not sorting it sooner

Having had her living in my caravan for six months before, there's no way I want her car stuck on my drive.

My wife especially prefers my sister in _very_ small doses.

puts you in a bit of a quandry then doens't it mate leave your sister to kill herself (potentialy) with her dodgy brakes or have your wife leave you because your sister's dodgy brakes have made her stay longer than nessecaery

in the end i think your sister is to blame and you hsould chanrge her lots of money for being lazy :)

'Cept she doesn't have lots of money, and I'd get never ending grief off my mum.

I reckon she was going for the lower unsprung mass improvements to the handling personally.
