Zetec oil - why?

The problems with the wrong oil in Ford Zetec engines are well documented, but can anyone tell me what is affected and why? Is it just sticky valves and why does it cause them to stick? How long does it take to get to the point of problems - is it an instantateous thing or does it build up over a period of time? If the wrong oil was dropped in, is it Ok just to drain and replace or is it recommended to do an engine flush? Engine in this case is a Focus 1800 petrol (yr 2000)

Sorry, a few questions but easily answered I'm sure!

Don't Zetecs (at least '98 onwards, Zetec-e) have solid tappets and no more chance of "sticky valves" ?

I thought a sticky valve was one which does not return to the shut position quickly enough because it can't slide properly in the guide. The tappet, solid or hydraulic, merely pushes it one way.

The problem is that- the guide "grips" the valve stem and it doesnt shut under spring pressure.

You are very unlikely to be suffering sticky valves with a Focus (black top zetec e) as they use a solid lifter and gum cutters on the valve stem.
