1997 miata: annoying sound when the clutch engages

I persuaded my fiance to buy herself a miata (perhaps I've always wanted the car myself), so she got herself a 1997 one, manual (of course) with 73 000 miles on it (she payed $6000). Everything seemed fine during the test drive. But now (once she gave out the cash) every time the clutch engages, an annoying sqeaking-meaouing sound comes somwhere from the front right end of the car.

I payed my mechanic $100 to figure out where the sound comes from; he spent two hours and found nothing. He said the sound is not a sign of anything bad and that we should not worry about it, since he would have the whole car apart to figure out what the source is. A local Lincoln-Mazda dealer did not find anything as well. Any suggestions? I feel a bit guilty since I was the one who picked the car... and my fiance gives me THE LOOK every time she shifts gears. Thanks in advance!

When the miata clutch slave cylinder is installed, a bit of grease is placed on the contact point of the slave cylinder piston. When the grease gets washed out, the linkage starts squeaking. It is located on the front right hand side of the car, exactly where you are hearing the noise. The solution is easy. Trace the clutch lines until you find the master cylinder and re-grease the piston contact. That nasty green marine grease will resist being washed out by water.

There's even an official document about this:

I did the fix more than a year ago, and it's still fine! The trick is to find the right kind of grease...
