Air filter - Jackson Racing or K&N

Time to change the air filter (insert) on my Eunos. The JR filter isn't that much more expensive than the standard Mazda filter (which appeals) but I was wondering if anyone had any experience with those compared to K&N filters?

Ideally I'd like to fit the JR cold air induction kit, but I unfortunately need to spend some money on fixing other faults first...

I'm not sure which (K&N or JR) passes the most dirt, but both are inferior as filters to the OEM paper cartridge. All three make the same power, so the only issue is how much extra dirt you want in your engine.

FWIW, I had a JR CAI for a couple of years. I'm back to the stock airbox with a paper filter and a Randall duct, and wish I'd never had the JR. I worry a little about the unnecessary wear it caused, without any real benefit.

You seem to be getting grumpy in your old age. You got about 20 additional hp out of your CAI. That is a lot of power for relatively little money.

Think of the glass being half full, instead of half empty. :)

No doubt true, but irrelevant to this discussion.

Nah, I think I recall estimating 10-12 from the CAI + hi-flow cat + muffler + timing bump. I'll stand by that, but I no longer believe the CAI had anything to do with it. It did improve throttle response a tiny bit, but my current Randall duct lets me use 87 octane in 90-degree weather, which the JR CAI would not. Further, I suspect the JR CAI's location 1) impedes cooling by blocking radiator airflow, and 2) results in airbox heatsoaking at any speed. Too high a price to pay for a minor throttle response benefit.

If cold air is the goal, suck it up, drill the hole in your firewall, and install a Randall.

The "20 hp power gain" is your claim, not mine--I always use RWHP, since it's all that can be documented without unreasonable effort. But hindsight always helps clarify things--removing the JR CAI made surprisingly little difference in how the car drove. I am not ashamed to correct myself when I've guessed wrong.

This isn't a guess: the main problem with the JR CAI is that it's a piece of junk. It doesn't fit most Miatas with enough clearance to prevent cracking due to vibration, and the most insidious cracks can't be seen without disassembling the airbox from the MAS adapter.

Shouldn't you be xeroxing syllabi for the fall semester or something? I thought your field was fluid dynamics, not ancient history...

We like to bring out people talents. Say, the grumpy even grumpier.

But I better start getting ready for my sabbatical...

Well, Leon, it looks like our ratings are up.

What's next? Our own TV show? We could call it "Last Cynic Standing."
