Clutch problems

having some trouble with my clutch on a 1990 Miata. Replaced the slave cylinder and have bleed the system multiple times. Sometimes the pedal is on the way to the floor and the clutch does not disengage all the way. There is not much play at the end part. Am going to try ans adjust the pedal. Any other help would be appreciated.

It's possible that your new slave cylinder is bad. (It happens, and more often with aftermarket parts) The master cylinder may also be bad. This would not be too unexpected given that the Miata is over ten years old.

For future reference. You can extend the life of the master and slave cylinders by flushing the clutch system and replacing the fluid every couple of years or so. This reduces the buildup of water and crud, so the over time wear on seals and corrosion due to water is reduced.

The key symptom of a bad slave cylinder (Other than the clutch malfunction) is an accumulation of fluid in the slave cylinder rubber boot, along with a need to add fluid. If the master cylinder is bad, you may notice the smell of brake fluid inside the car. One way I've used to test a master cylinder is to disconnect the line to the slave at the master cylinder, plug the open port on the master, and see if the clutch pedal stops moving before it is at the floor. If it stops and holds, the master is good. If it does not, check for leaks. If no leaks can be found, and there is no smell of fluid inside the car, the master cylinder has bad internal seals and needs to be replaced or rebuilt. Replacements generally come without the plastic tank, so don't damage the old one.
