grinding noise from brakes

Hello all,

Recently, whenever I try to apply brakes on my '92 miata, there is a loud griding noise. It started about a month back, when it was intermittent and not too loud. I think the trouble began soon after an oil (and fluids) change, but it might have been developing from before that. Now, the noise is present all the time, as if something is rubbing against the wheel when I run it, getting very loud when I appl;y my brakes. I say this because, the grinding sound's intensity fluctuates rhythimically as the car is moving and the frequency increases as I speed-up. Has anyone else encountered this before?

I am now very wary about which mechanic to go to, in case this was brought about by a simple oil change. Is there any mechanic that anyone would recommend near Ithaca, NY?

I appreciate any help with this problem.

A very *worried* Miata owner, Madhu.

Sounds like your brake pads were thin and are breaking up. The pads live between the metal rotors/drums and the metal calipers. When they fall apart it causes metal on metal contact and the brakes stop working. I once had this happen after a getting my tires rotated, I think the unbolting/bolting vibrated them apart. You can't blame the mechanics though, because it won't happen unless the brakes are worn out anyway.

Get it checked ASAP.

What you're hearing is the metal to metal that occurs after you ignore the nasty 'squeeling' noise that's built into the brake pads to get your attention. If you procrastinate, there's a good chance that you'll scar your rotors. If lightly, you'll have to turn them, if heavily damaged, you could have to replace them.

Keep in mind just because fronts are worn out, doesn't mean that rears are worn out and visa versa. It helps allot if you know the difference when you see a worn out brake pad versus a 'still good' brake pad, it'll be much less likely you'll be ripped off.

It seems that the problem was due to a failed calipers mechanism. The brake calipers no longer self-release after I catch the brake. Because of that they were continuously rubbing against the rotors, causing very rapid wear of my brake pads. So fast that the pads were completely worn out and my rotor was also grooved in within weeks. But, now it is all fixed. The mechanic thinks that the calipers don't require replacing and I will be going back in two weeks to make sure that they are working the way they should. Generally speaking is the choice of brand for the rotor or brake pads a big issue? He is using "NAPA auto parts".

Thanks, Madhu.
