Have to sell my beloved Christine!!!

Hi everyone,

Well, because of some lay offs at work that appear to be coming and with me having too many vehicles (3), I am going to have to sell my beloved Christine, plus an unloved 96 Chevy. I have no idea what to ask for her, but I figure some of you that I have depended on in the past for answers could help. Christine is a pristine black/with tan leather 97. 71K on the odometer. She has been babied by me for the last 4 years and is garage kept, fed Mobil 1 every 3K, Redline in her 5spd and differential, changed at 30K intervals. Top, rear window and boot are excellent. Pwr ant. pwr windows pwr mirrors am/fm cassette A/C cruise Torsen diff. new tires (Cooper LifeLiners) new timing belt new belts

Also, in 5K miles she will need to be tuned up and I have purchased all the parts from Trussville to do this and these will be included. NGK plugs NGK plug wires pcv valve air filer gas filter

2 Mazda oil filters and 2 drain plug gaskets 3 quarts Redline MTL 1 quart of Redline 75W-90

Any ideas on what I should ask for her? Lanny, what do you think? Man, this makes me sick to even talk about, but you got to do what you go to do. Thanks guys and talk to you all later.

I just got off the phone with a guy that made an acceptable offer for my

91A. I'm going to miss that car! But at least I will still have my 95M :-)

I might guess in the $7000 range? Sorry to hear about the layoff thing looming. I went through that myself a year and a half ago with 23.5 years of service :-(

Thanks guys for the replies. It does pain me, more than most will know, but I have got to be realistic too, so I have to do it. I have been here for 16 years and there is no ones job that is safe right now. It is getting bad or should I say it is bad. Thanks again and talk to you all later.

I was lucky that the Miata didn't have to be sold. After over a year I got called back and hope that it will not happen again, but there are no guarantees! The house and cars are now paid off, so in the event it were to happen again it wouldn't be half as bad. Good luck selling Christine. I got a tiny bit misty eyed when I got off the phone last night with the guy buying my car, so I know where you are coming from. Good luck Ron!!

Thanks Mike, I appreciate the thoughts. Unfortunately , my house and two of my cars are not paid off, which is my biggest problem. If I can sell two of the cars, I can probably make it with just the house payment. Anyway....I will make it one way or the other. I called the bank today and they told me that I should ask $9500 for my Miata. When I checked on Kellys Blue Book, it came back with a price of $6150 to a private buyer and then if a dealer was selling it, they would probably ask $7100. I checked around on autotrader.com last night and there were 97's in the $10K price range. I'm really confused now with the wide range of pricing and don't know what to ask for her. Don't want to screw anyone on it and don't want to get took on it either. Guess I will just start high and work my way down.:) Anyway, thanks again for the reply.

Having recently done a lot of shopping, I can safely say they don't seem to sell for KBB price -- much higher. Even private sellers are asking thousands more than KBB.

Cars I've looked at:

'92 w/ Leather, PW, 70k miles, extremely clean - Dealer $5,900 firm. '94 w/ Leather, PW, 71k miles, looked good - Private $7,600 negotiable. '96 39k miles, very good condition - Dealer $8995 - bought it for $7995 (and, yes, I think I paid too much, but the CarFax report was clean too).

As far as our jobs go, I might see my job off-shored any day, that's why I went ahead and bought the Miata, because I figured now or never. It's funny, 20 years of experience and Master's Degree used to be worth something...

to get a better idea of what people are asking in your area. I bought my 94 from a dealer who had it on Auto Trader. I think that I got a fair deal at $4100 + tax for a 94 "C" with 83K on the odo. Very straight-runs great!

Ron,

Where are you located? I know a couple people looking for a Miata and I'm trying to steer them towards one that has been owned by "one of us" (afficianados). They see all these used car dealer ads on ebay and believe what they read! I've got a student in particular who is looking really hard although 7K is probably the top of his price range since he's also paying his way through college. Sorry about the job, I'm trying desperately to get students to broaden their skills beyond computers (it's what everyone wants to do) so that they have some ability to move from one career to the next since that's going to be the pattern for the future. A top executive of a major software company, who has been a huge supporter of our college, was just told by his company that he was being transfered to India (not optional) in 4 weeks or he could just quit. 18 year employee with 300K+ salary + options, etc.. and just bang, move or quit. He and his family are devastated but don't really have much choice since there aren't many 300K jobs out there and of course, that's what he's learned to live on. Good luck to you.
