The light means a problem in the airbag circuitry and the airbag is most likely non-functional. Get to a dealer or good repair facility ASAP, this is NOT for most do-it-yourself types.

there's plenty of info on miata.net so that you can have a pretty good idea what's up. You've got to count how many blips it's doing and there's a corresponding error code.

Could cost big bucks, too. The 'bag light stayed on for my '94 G Cherokee and the dealer wanted $900 to fix it. Turned out to be a bad light and the bag was OK. Fortunately, I threatened to report Jeep to NHSTA for bogus airbags, and Chrysler covered the repair.

By the way, to disable the airbag requires permission from NHSTA. Otherwise (at least in my state), you will never pass safety inspection.
