Oil Overfilled

Not the first time I over filled oil in my '91 Miata. The last time I overfilled a couple of quarts and had to bring it to a shop to drain out the excess oil.

Now, I have added about a half-quart too much oil. Its about a quarter of an inch above the word FULL on the dip stick.

Should I once again have it drained, or let it go?

If yes, is there a way to drain it with a tube and suction which would be a lot easier.

Check it cold, if it's only 1/4" it should be OK.

Sure, they make hand operated pumps that will allow you to take out as much as you want.

This one is pretty primative but it'll do what you want.

I use one of these, should cost around $10-$15 at a parts supply.

Pep Boys should have them.... Mine came with an adaptor for a small diameter hose that goes down the dipstick tube.

Or you could just use a long vinyl tube and siphon it. Takes a while but I've done it in motorcycles. Just get the "out" end lower than the engine and suck the oil up over the top and far enough to get it all going.

Do you stick the tube down the dip stick or the oil fill spout? Also, is it just gravity that will cause the oil to siphon out or do you need to pump it?

Whichever one yields "black gold"...

Gravity alone will do the job, assuming the "out" end is lower than the "engine" end. May start slow, given viscosity effects. And just remember to watch the bend, so you can get your mouth away b4 the flow starts!!!

Dipstick tube. Don't siphon it, it tastes REALLY bad and you will get a mouthful but if you decide to do so, any siphon works on gravity, no pump needed.

I doubt a 1/2 quart will hurt anything. You've got to assume Mazda put in some margin of safety when it marked the FULL on the dip stick. If you ever see white smoke coming out your exhaust, then drain the excess oil.

I've tried several pumps to fill my transmission fluid. I ended up getting one like the link below from AutoZone. I imagine you can tape a thin long tube to the end of it and suck the oil out the dip stick hole or the filler hole.
