Rust

I have noticed a patch of rust forming on the lower panel just forward of the rear wheel well. Any insight on how a big deal this is, if it is indicative of a larger problem, and about how much it might cost to get repaired would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. '95 Triple Black

IIRC, it's more of a PITA than a big deal to fix. A friend of mine had to cut out the affected piece and have a new section welded in, then primered and painted it.

However, it does indicate that your rain drains are not working properly and you should clean them out more often. I found that a tine off a metal leaf rake (the long skinny tines, not the short ones) is the proper size and length for cleaning the drain. Just poke it down in there from the top and you'll be surprised at how much gunk will come out the bottom. The drain is located just behind the seat belt tower. You might also have to poke up from the bottom too but be careful, that nasty black gunk will spit out all over your hand.

Rust forms because the metal is not protected and moisture is present. You have to remove or "convert" the rust, and then protect the metal from further damage by coating it with something. "Pinholed" metal may be present after rust is removed. We used to use a sandable liquid epoxy to fill small "pinholes".

I noticed some rust inside the gas filler neck the other day.
