rusty rocker panels

I have a 90 that I inherited from my dad when he was ready to get another car, but the poor car lived in Ohio for years. Anyway, because of its life up north, it has quite a bit of rust in the rocker panels towards the rear of the car. Because of the unibody construction of the convertible, would sandblasting away the rust & welding in some new metal work okay, or would that compromise the structural integrity of the car?

Same thing happened to my '96. Right below the rear of the door.

Perhaps my Mazda Dealer's body shop guys are just incompetent, but after I had mine fixed and re-painted it was only a few months before the rust was back.

They're incompentent. Rust does not return if it's REALLY fixed (eradicated, not covered with bondo.) Just because these were the Mazda dealer guys doesn't mean they know how to fix rust.

They were a fairly well reputed local body shop before the Mazda dealer bought them. Apparently things have gone down hill.
