Squeal when I let out the clutch

My '92 has developed an odd problem. It first started happening when it was raining, so I thought it was due to excess moisture, but it happened today when it was nice and dry.

When I let out the clutch in first gear, I hear a squealing sound. It sounds like rubber rather than metal, so I don't think it's the transmission, but I'm no mechanic. It only lasts a few seconds and only in first. If I let out the clutch really, really slow, it doesn't seem to happen, either. I thought I'd check with the local experts before hitting the shop. Any ideas? TIA.

Check "serpentine" belt, when it's a little loose, makes very characteristic sound especially when moving from stop, on cold engine or wet days.

Yes, that's the same symptom that started appearing on my '93 a few weeks after I finally had the belts replaced (only 45,000 miles past due!). It would only happen on wet days when the engine was cold. At first I thought it was my clutch.

If you're standing in front of the car facing it, on the left side of the engine you'll see your alternator. From above you can't see it, but if you reach underneath the alternator you can feel an adjustment screw which you can easily turn with a wrench.

I was worried about overtightening the belt and ruining bearings by too-great lateral tension, so I only tightened the bolt about a half turn. If it screeched the next day when I started it cold I tightened it another half-turn. In two or three days I'd got the belt tight enough it hasn't slipped any more.

Agreed, check each of your belts, there's not a direct connection between the clutch movement and the offending belt but the torque on the belts changes when the power is applied and a marginally adjusted belt could well squeal.

Good luck, Chris
