Water in the boot/trunk!

We are having record* amounts of rain here in Denmark and unfortunately a portion of that is finding it's way into the boot of my 1999 Miata!

The whole boot is damp and some of the carpeting is wet plus there is enough water under the spare that it makes sense drain it by use of the drain holes. And all this from the car simply being parked in heavy rain.

Any tips?

Kind regards Bruno

*Something like 3x to 4x of normal and more than ever recorded.

Rain rail leaking?

Leaking around the antenna perhaps?

Most likely it is the top (hood) area drain hoses plugged up with some debris or forgotten golf ball that rolled around back there. Water backs up and pours right into the trunk (boot).

You may also want to check the wiring to the center brake light that is attached to the boot hinge.

Had mine get into an off position (possibly from overloaded boot exercises), and it caught between the boot lid and the weather stripping. Caused some leaks in heavy rain until I watched the boot closing slowly, keeping an eye on that area. If readjusting the path doesn't work, cable ties to the hinge will do the trick.

Thank you all for the suggestions.

I have checked the drain holes, the antenna and also the wiring to the third brake light without finding anything so I guess the rain rail is the culprit. From what I can read it's a possible DIY project but not an easy one so I guess it's time to visit the MX-5 specialist.

You might check on both sides of the trunk, just outside of the weatherstrip, the seam where the two different plates are glued together.

I found mine leaking on both sides. I went to an Autozone here in the US and bought a tube of Awesome GOOP. It is a clear sealing liquid that is waterproof upon application. Look for this product or something similar.

Apply this along the entire seam on the outside and also on the underside of the same area. I used latex gloves so as not to get my fingers nasty with the stuff.

I agree, I keep putting my top replacement off.

The freedom to thrown down the top without even using a noodle, having no fear of it being cut, and no thoughts of using a boot are kind of nice, but I have to do it soon. That rear window is driving me nuts when I do have to raise it.

That's what she said.....

That's what he said...... :-)
