2001 Protege

Hello all,

I'm trying to help a friend out to try to diagnose a problem on his 2001 Protege. He has about 60k on the car and he is noticing the following problem.

-if i start the car in the morning and drive continuously, there is no issue

-if i have driven it, shut it down...when i restart it boggs down and misses until i start driving it down the road and it comes back to life

I had him reset the ECU but the check engine light and problem still persists. Do you think that it is possible that the spark plug wires are bad? He has replaced the spark plugs and none of them showed any deteriorations. If this was the case, wouldn't the problem happen all of the time? Any other suggestions?

Also I know on Honda's there is a way to short out 2 pins using a paper clip on the ODB port and reading out the check engine light for the error code. Is there anything similar on this Protege?

Thanks for all the help in advance,

Nick

It would help to know the engine size ... if it is the 2 liter the most likely cause is the egr valve ... they would stick open at times .... Mazda has modified them to help prevent this ....

The model year is also a 2000 not a 2001. My apologies.

The 1.8 engine had the same EGR valve ....so ... it is still a possibility. The only way to test the valve without the car acting up is to have a proper diagnostic tester to command the valve open & closed .... when this is done the valve will usually stick if it is faulty.
