Just replaced the FPR on a 91 420SEL. It's waz located on the firewall, under the hood, behind the engine. It had two very similar looking 1 inch by 3 inch units located next to each other, but the pin pattern was different. Wasn't cheap either!

What's the fuel system doing?

The SEL's owner had a shop suggest changing both fuel pumps, the relay, the sieve and fuel fliter ($1000+) cause it was dying/stumbling The fuel filter had a very fine black powder in the gas I dumped out (filtered it thru a couple of coffee filters). Didn't waste money on the pumps and the car has been running fine ever since. {finger's crossed}...Ken

The fuel pump relay is about the size of cigarette box... slightly bigger and wider... black in color and has the word 'kickdown' on it... It would probably be located in the fusebox or along the firewall... or even behind the cover behind the battery.

I'd suggest somehow getting a fuel pressure test and check if the pressure's correct..that would eliminate the FPR Easier....listen for the whirring noise of the fuel pump(s) when the car's running.

The 420SEL I was working on apparently had a plugged up fuel filter, but changed the FPR also

thanks for all your replies. i have finally found the FPR in the passenger foot well behind the bulkhead or as you call it firewall. i removed it and cleaned the connections but feel sure it needs replacing. will hope it lasts until i can get to the real world and buy a new one!!!!! lynne
