I have just seen a tidy looking MB 300 SE. 126,000 miles lots of electrics which all seem to be working. What faults should i look for? What mpg can I expect. I presently drive a merc 200 1984. Any tips gratefully received. Thanks Mike ( snipped-for-privacy@aol.com)
I've had my 89 W126 300SE for 18 months now - has 166K KMs (about 103K mls). Cream leather, roof, alloys. Wood is as new. Great, solid, quiet and smooth to drive. Get 22 to 23MPG around town (4.54 litres to a gallon ie. old Aussie type of gallons). Had to get a new radiator 2 months ago and change the plastic thermostat housing to an alloy one. ... just get the cleanest one you can afford and get a written pre-purchase inspection done at a specialist MB workshop ... it's money well spent. Good luck.
Well I have a '91 300SE and it get about 16-17 MPG around town around 20-21 MPG on the highway, I could probably get better if I didn't put my foot in the gas so much. I have had it for about 3 years now and it has 167,000 miles on it. All the electronics work except about 6 months ago the windshield washer quit working and now my transmission is starting to slip between 2nd and 3rd. One thing you need to check is the head, I had an oil leak and didn't like it, I was told by my shop that that is a common for this car, so they pulled off the head and did a valve job replaced the timing chain and guides at a cost of around $1800.
I like mine it is the only car that I drive and my wife likes it so much that she want to get a newer one when we can get down to one car in a few years. I just hope it will hang on for 3-4 more years.
