When I filled up at a Beacon station in Santa Cruz, CA, two days ago, diesel was selling for $1.85. (For those not famliar with it, Beacon is a chain of cut-rate gas stations in California.) That's relatively cheap by current standards, but it was still higher than whatever they were charging for regular.
What's the explanation for the fact that diesel is now often higher-priced than regular gasoline? It can't be because of any recent upsurge in demand. Diesel cars haven't been common for decades.
For years, diesel was cheaper than regular gas. The first set of fuel prices that I remember ever being conscious of were from the mid 1960s, when premium was $.35/gallon, regular $.25, and diesel a paltry $.19. The prices increased over the years, of course, but the approximate price ratio between them stayed more or less the same until fairly recently.
And by the bye, if the diesel fuel that we purchase at gas stations is #2 diesel, that what's #1 diesel? That's never been clear to me. Is it that oil that's used to heat homes back East, or is that some third thing?

FWIW:
wholesale price in NY harbor, #2 oil (diesel) is over 20 cents cheaper than unleaded gas. the refiners will claim that the diesel sold for autos is a "premium" blend and that is about 12 cents under no lead

Yes, but $8 of gas gets you from one end of the country to another. In North America it won't even get you out of the city.
