E420 info needed!

Might be buying a E420 here soon and need some advice. Its a 97 with 45k. Two problems: I want to buy a extended warranty but the best I can find is a 3 yrs/36k for $3900 bucks. I worry about the car being mega bucks to fix
after the warrany runs out, and if I want to trade it in after that i'm afraid the re-sale value might drop fast. So what I would like to know is, is the E420 a solid car as far as reliability, longativity and quality? I know benz makes the best when it comes to those features but I need to know if it will be breaking every 2 months leaving me with high repair bills. Thanks

I just purchased a '94 E420 with 128K on it from the local dealer for $9500.00. The car is in very nice shape and wasn't cleaned or detailed for me. I wasn't able to get a warranty with it and it was a Purchased a"As is - Where is". I haven't had any issues as yet except for a minor radio electrical issue. I think this is where you will need a warranty if in fact it covers electrical?

I have had a 96E since new and have had 2 things go wrong, both rear window regulators have gone bad. Other than that I have not done anything but normal maintenance. Get a Starmark model from MB and you won't have to worry about it. They treat it like a new car. This model E has a softer suspension than older or newer models unless it has a airbag suspension and you need to note if the shocks are worn out. I replaced mine at 50K miles. Overall I would highly recommend this model.

Run a Carfax to verify mileage and any major problems before you buy, and look for maint records. Seems like a fairly good price so you have some leeway for the warranty. Read the terms of the warranty carefully - even call them and ask some what-ifs. Collecting from these companies can sometimes be a pain.
A well maintined eClass with 45K miles is hardly even broken in:
I've owned a few eClass cars and currently have three w124s with well over 200K miles and a '98 w210 with 90K. Bought them all used with 80 - 100K miles. Ultra reliable and buying used actually made them a good bargain over the years considering the miles I've put on them. They've had no major failures (knock on wood :-). My biggest repair expense was $1300 for a new A/C ( I now do all minor repairs and maint myself tho). If you are handy, you can really save money by doing the required maintenace yourself. Repairs can be expensive but a good independent MB specialist can help ease things over the dealer prices.
Keep up the required maintenance especially fluid/filter changes in engine, cooling, tranny, and brakes - it will save you big $'s in the long run!
Another thing to consider is to take the $4k and put it aside for major repairs. Bargain them down another $2K or $3K and you'll have a nice little stash for a rainy day.

I have a 97 E420 with 160K miles on it. I have done NO repairs to it. I mean NONE! I wouldn't bother with the extended warranty. They are incredibly solid and a simply awesome car. Even with 160K it rides better than my wifes brand new Volvo Cross Country!
Good luck with your purchase!
