New E-Class W212 to be presented in January at the Detroit Motor Show

The new E-Class W212 will be presented next January at the Detroit International Motor Show in the USA (Jan 17 to Jan 25th, press days starting Jan 13th).

Advanced security features like driver knee airbag and sleep warner, the latter called "attention assyst" and showing a hot cup of coffee in the central display in the dashboard...

A front camera recognizes speed limit signs and shows them in the display (option).

The cars also feature an active hood which in case of an accident lifts 50 mm to protect pedestrians. This is a non-destructive system and so in case of an unwanted activation can be reset by simply opening and closing the hood.

From fall 2009 on there will also adaptive seat belt tension limiters for the rear seats be available.

There will be also a warning system to prevent the drivers to overlook other cars in the blind angle when they want to change lanes (operated by radar).

It will also be the first car ever which can adopt the headlights to the individual driving conditions automatically, plus it will have an electronic high beam assist, sensored by a cam behind the windshield checking the conditions every 40 milli seconds.

The reach of the B-Xenon headlights can be automatically adjusted by that system, too.

Foglights will have LED technology.

Design will change, moving away from the rounded curvy look to more edges, also the wheel wells will be more accentuated.

Front look is similar to the study "Concept Fascination" which was presented at the Paris Motor Show this spring.

And in the future the march of technologies will continue at Mercedes, from COMAND systems with permanent online access - no more CDs and DVDs, data retrieved online from a central server - to laser scanners at the front who detect road conditions in advance and then give the information to the actice suspension who will care for a smooth ride ("Pre-Scan"), a lot of things will be seen in later years.
