R 134 conversion Minneapolis Area

does anyone know of a good service provided in the Minneapolis area? I want to convert my 380SL from R-12 to R134 A/C I can't afford to take to the dealer who wants a fortune. Thanks

Why do you want to convert it? If it ain't broke don't fix it!

Mine one the other hand was broke, so I bought the conversion kit, expelled the remaining r-12 from the line, installed the spuds, installed the two part stop leak and two cans of 134a, and its running like a champ all for $30 bucks.

Don't know if I would have been so gutsy if it were working, but "Hey" can always go pay the big bucks, right?

Worked for me, don't know if its right for you.

Worked for me, don't know if its right for you. ____________________________________________ Find a good indie AC repair shop and have them check out your system. Why convert if your R-12 unit is working? It is usually much cheaper to fix the R-12 system than to convert to R-134. If you are keeping the car long term I would certainly stay with the R-12. And the cost of R-12 continues to drop....still not as cheap as R-134 but nowhere near as expensive as it used to be.

Why is the cost of R12 coming down? I thought because of environmental law it wasn't being manufactured in the US anymore, which was why the price went sky high. Has something changed?

I had mine converted about 5 years ago, when I needed a new compressor, so that I wouldn't have to worry about future availability and the high price of R12. The downside is that after conversion, you typically lose about 20% or so in cooling capacity.
