Re: 300SE Finally on the Road!

Thanks to all the info I got on the newsgroup. The 1991 300SE I saved from

Nice job. The W126, even with the smaller engines (2.8 and 3.0 litres) are fine cars and excellent cruisers. I have a 1983 280SE with well over 200,000 kms which I use on a daily basis. It is a pleasure to drive.

An excellent job! Do you mind if I ask how much you paid for the car and how much you spent on parts to fix it up? You're definitely the proud new owner of an excellent looking Benz, salvage title or not.

Newbie question - I have an oportunity to pick up a 92 300SE with 63000 original miles on it. The car was obviously garaged /stored there is not a blemish on the 2 tone goldish color. I am wondering about keeping this beauty on the road. Even with low miles there must be some "estimated" costs for annual maintenance. What do you think it is worth? Any and all comment are welcome. I hope to make an informed decesion by Friday

Thanks all

If you can find a trusted MB independent garage or do the maintenance yourself, the cost should be close to other cars you may have owned (parts are a bit higher than many other cars though). However you may find the Mercedes has more extensive maintenance schedule than other cars you have owned (e.g. brake fluid and coolant changes). If you take it to an MB dealer's service department you can expect to pay significantly more than some independents (I will leave the value equation up to you).

63K miles is very low especially for the 3 liter motor. I have never owned that body style SE but have had a few 300E's with that motor and found them ultra reliable and easy to maintain, even after 200K miles.

You can check what it is worth by going to KBB.com and checking the Private Party value, or better yet watch what a few sell for on eBay. It will not be easy to find 92's with that low mileage.

Check the maintenace record book and run a Carfax on it.

Good luck! The '92 was the first year for that bodystyle and there were LOTS AND LOTS of issues.
