Reset of "miles to next scheduled maintenance" counter

My '98 SLK230 is now seven years old and the warranty period -even extended- expired. 10 days ago I took it to an independent shop for service and they did not know how to reset the "miles to next scheduled maintenance" counter.

Could someone, please, let me know the DIY procedure to reset the counter?

The counter began to show "days" to schedule maintenance and now it shows the little wrench indicating "days" past the scheduled maintenance (14 days so far). The car has only 37K miles on the odometer.

TIA

It is stated in your owner's manual... very easy job.

Thanks Josh and Tiger for the info. I'll try the procedure ASAP. For the life of me I couldn't find the instructions on the SLK Owner's Manual. I do read it when desperate, ha, ha.

Have you compared sevice costs main/franchised dealer vis-a-vis independent?

Another thing: would it not be reasonable to expect a decent indie dealer (Mec specialist) to know how to reset the counter?

Thanks, Dori, for your comments.

1) I have compared the repair/maintenance costs and the independent's are about 15% to 20% of the dealer's, depending on the nature of the job. Most of the time they only change oil, filters, brake pads and rotors.

2) The fact that the independents don't know Mercs' intimately does not bother me because I never take my cars to them except for routine maintenance jobs. Any major required services or jobs are handled by my MB dealer who, by the way, is excellent.

3) I cannot blame anybody but myself for not "finding" the counter reset procedure in the Owners Manual. Obviously I had a senior moment.

Good point! This seems a bad sign...

That is an extaordinary gap. The independent is no more than a fifth of the official dealer. That's actually hard to believe on a like-for-like basis...but if you say so...
