SL recommendation?

I am interested in an SL between '83 and '93. Are there any particular years or models that are generally considered better or worse than others?

You are talking about two different cars, the R107 body and the R129 body. The R129 body was introduced in 1989, it features a fully automatic retractable top and a retractable rollover bar. The R129 is safer, has more trunk space and features far more electronics. The R107 looks a little bit more classy and oldfashioned, it is basically early 70's technology. I would suggest taking a R107 after 1986, when the 300SL replaced the 280SL and the 560SL was introduced. This car was improved in many ways. If you take a R129, you should avoid a 1989 and 1990 model because Mercedes had some technical issues with the early cars.

Strange selection of years.

For the W107, the best years are 1972/3 and 1988/9 - 350/450SL,s. Don't know about the later cars except that the 300SL was the "economy" model compared with the 500SL - great looking acrs and probablt technologically advanced compared with the W107,s

"the 300SL was the "economy" model compared with the 500SL - great looking acrs and probablt technologically advanced compared with the W107,s ____________________________________________ The '89 and later SLs were technologically advanced....and that means much more expensive to repair when things start wearing out....as they will. The older 107 models like the 450SL and 560SL were really well built and have plenty of extras to keep a person happy, especially if the car is used as a second car for the weekends, etc. And the 107 will cost a lost less that one of the newer SLs.
