sprinter van power loss

2.9 diesel sprinter van 140,000 miles 1996 has suddenly lost power above 3,500 rpm accompanied by smoke in exhaust. Idles fine starts ok Any suggestions as to likely cause, fuel starvation, loss of turbo boost,EDC malfunction??? most welcome thanks

maybe turbo, hard to tell without looking... time to trade to a vito... :)

My 312 did that, wouldn't rev, solution was to up plug everything on engine and plug back in, seemed to re-set the fault.
