The Rise of Diesel 2

So BMW is launching its 1 Series in the UK in September. Among the initial engine range the most powerful one will be the 2-litre diesel with 163 bhp. The 2-l petrol will have 'only' 150 bhp.

(BTW, the reviewer in the UK Sunday Times felt he wanted another 100 bhp but, then, wouldn't we all?)

Do they give any pricing information? Maybe the 1 can take on the overpriced WV Golf for the title of "Best small hatchback car, which is teh most fun to drive". With RWD, at least it sounds like more fun to drive than the Golf. And, even though the 1 ain't much of a looker, it sure isn't as fugly as the new Golf.

The reviewe describes it as "pugnacious" and "thuggish". Jeremy Clarkson thinks its ugly.

These are UK prices. If the 1 was going to be sold here I seriously doubt we would be paying UK equivilant prices. We don't on any other BMW models.

It was short-reviewed by a US mag a few months ago and they said it was the finest example of a BMW driving car in a long time. They felt it was the BMW with the highest driving enjoyment quotient. I think it was Car and Driver. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

I've only seem pictures of course, but I think it's a fine looking car.

The reviewer enjoyed the driving experience itself.

It's a good thing we have JC, because otherwise I wouldn't be able to decide for myself.

Will the 1-series be available as a sedan? I think the hatch is ugly.

I doubt it. I also looked on the "international" and German websites. Both are long on useless videos featuring people and buildings and short on proper car pics...

That is a trend which can be seen since years with car manufacturer's websites and brochures: No product information but displaying a certain lifestyle - the buyers shall associate that lifestyle with the advertised car(s).

When you want real information you have to go to the press sites where you can find both: written info and (big) photographs.

I have seen a BMW 1-series in real life - ugly, ugly, ugly... ====:-((((

Where are those elegant BMW designs of the past? Think of _Neue Klasse_ from the 1960's, the legendary 02's, the second- and third-generation

7-series, the first 5-series etc. pp. - that were _great_ designs...

Juergen - still thinking that BMW chief designer Mr. Bangle was placed there by DC... ;-)

Not only. The company I used to work for -- making specialised ingredients for the pharmaceutical industry -- went the same way. Marketing literature packed with facts gave way to glamorous brochures full of blah.

It's a shame, isn't it?

Sometimes I think I'm too old for today's world...

Juergen - me myself and the W123 together are 66 years of age ;-)

New trend:

DAS + 190E + CLK (a mere toddler from 2001) = 67.
