Diagnosis please - 1970 - (1275) midget clutch

Further to my previous posting as it is a nice day I have relented and got under the midget and found:-

  1. The rubber boot on the slave cylinder has come off allowing fluid to leak and there appears to be much too much spare travel on the push rod towards the rear of the car.
  2. I push the rubber boot back on having pushed the piston (which is still attached to the clutch release arm) in.
  3. I put some more clutch fluid in and pump the pedal several times to build pressure pending bleeding. I look under the car and the the rubber boot is off again and I have more clutch fluid on my brick weave.

Do I simply need a new slave cylinder or is the push rod travel indicative of mechanical problems with the clutch / release mechanism implying an engine out job? Prior to the loss of clutch fluid last July I was not experiencing any clutch problems i.e. no slippage or squeeling etc.

There should be no fluid coming out of the cylinder with or without the boot.

the cylinder needs to be replaced or repaired.

Fixing the cylinder would be your first step.

as a self-employed mechanic i have worked on most mgs, if i remember correctly the a series engine had a carbon thrust bearing and was very prone to wear hench the excess free play you have noticed.i suspect the slave cylinder piston has proberbly come out of the cylinder bore .advise a complete new clutch and cylider be fitted.also check the crankshaft for end float .mick grant tuning sheffield
