auto mini

Hi I have an 1989 Automatic Mini Cooper lookalike which I brought last year.

It now seems to judder and seems to struggle when going uphills.

It makes a grr-skreek noise when downshifting and braking.

I have checked the oil and filled it the max and it still makes the grr-skreek noise and judders which makes the whole car shake.

Can you please give me any advise to what the problem maybe.

Thank you

Rich

Have you checked/replaced all the electricals? Like the spark plugs, dizzy cap, rotor arm, points, condenser, HT leads etc? Also what state is the battery in? Oh and top up the carb. dashpot with a little engine oil too.

I'd check these out first, then if the problem persists I'd get it crypton tuned after that I'd seek out a good Mini specialist or if there's none in your area (for instance if their hundreds of miles away, like in my case) get it looked at by a good qualified gearbox specialist as maybe the auto-box has had it's day. Reconditioned replacements are available, but they cost a bit.

All the best,

The noise you describe is one of the clutches slipping inside the gearbox. You say you've checked the oil, but have you changed it? Automatic Minis need regular oil and filter changes. They don't like synthetic oil, or oil additives. This is the first, easiest and cheapest thing you can do.

Good advice, also try overfilling the oil a bit. As much as one-quarter of an inch above the full mark. This often helps.
