strange radio cassette happenings

Hi,

I wonder if anyone has come across this before? I've got a Rover mini cooper T reg, I'm having some weird problems with the radio cassette, which is the rover standard type with a removable front panel. What has happened is that the radio will not work, there is no code warning on the display which of course happens when the battery is disconnected. Even when you turn the radio off and the engine is still running there is a faint orange light on the screen, and when I remove the front panel I can see lights on behind it, as if there is still power going to the unit in some way. This happens when the headlights are off and as far as I'm aware shouldn't light when the headlights are off. I tried disconnecting the wires from the back of the radio and plugging them back in but to no avail.

But what is weirder is the rear speakers seem to be picking up a signal from the wipers as I can hear them also coming over the speakers, as well as picking up other noises from the accelerator pedal etc, it's as if it's not earthed correctly or something.

I know that the distributor for the mini is right near the front grille and can short out if wet, it has shorted recently but only in motorway driving in torrential rain, this started happening the other morning, it was raining but nothing major.

Any ideas?

Cheers,

Neil.

Any chance that the windscreen seal is leaking and water is getting into the radio? I've heard it's quite a common problem.

Yeah I agree with Clive as the stereo got fried in my niece's 98' Mini Paul Smith LE as the windscreen seal failed and I now the same thing happened in several late Mini's owned by friends too. Sadly it means getting the seal replaced/repaired and buying a new stereo.

Go for a cheap mp3 / cd player, there only about 50 quid, they are very easy to wire up, tapes are useless.

Just bought one for £60ish with SD card and USB slot not fitted it yet as I haven't got a dash yet but in addition to my 256MB memory stick I have an old 20 GB USB drive waiting to try.

Thanks guys, I will take a look at the seal thing. I'm using my iPod connected into the radio via one of those cassette things, ridiculous but I like to keep everything standard if I can.

There is a product in a tin that you can put around window rubbers, its a liquid that seals window seals, its poured on & the excess wiped off, I have used it a few times, quite good, think it was called something like "comma seek & seal"

Maybe it's possible to get the stereo repaired? Well it's nice to keep as it's got the Mini badge on the front hasn't it?
