Accessories don't work in "On" position

After leaving my car parked in a parking lot most of today I noticed while driving home that my radio would go out for just a second when I hit my brakes. I then stopped to get gas and my seatbelt wouldn't move forward (I have a 1993 Mitsubishi Eclipse). After getting home and testing I found that some of my accessories won't work when the key is in the "On" position without the car being started. The windows don't work, the seatbelt won't move with the door being opened, and my radio doesn't work. However my cigarette lighter and air conditioning both work when it's in the "On" position. What could be causing this? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Chris

Is your alternator light on? If so, check the 100 amp main fuse. It could also be one of the relays in the engine bay. I had the main fuse blow on my

  1. If I turned on the headlights, the horn would sound and the lights wouldn't come on. Took me a min to figure out that I blew the main fuse when doing a turbo swap.

If it looks blown, replace it. It is a 2 buck part and is held in by two 10 mm bolts.Yes you can wait, but why? The battery will be draining and unless you have yellow top optima, I wouldn't. You may drain an old battery past it's life.

The big question is why did it blow? Did you do something? Stereo, or work on the engine?

I live in a very rural area and need to drive my car until tomorrow afternoon, that's the only time I can go to get a replacement. Probably about an hour and a half worth of driving.

I can't think of any reason why it would have blown, that same morning the seatbelt moved forward after I removed the key like it it suppose to do, but after leaving it parked all day I drove it home to discover the problem that I now have. The only work I've had done was about a month ago on the alternator, it went out and had to be replaced. I would think though that the fuse would have went out earlier though. Thank you for your help, Chris

Changing the alternator fuse worked. I almost made it to school when it died. After school I crossed my fingers and checked the only auto parts store in our small town and they had exactly what I needed. I got a jump and it is back and running again. Thank you very much for your help, Chris

Glad to hear. I still think that's supposed to be a 100 amp fuse...but you will need to watch your battery from now on. Completing discharging it shortens it's life and capacity.
