Galant 88 wipers

I've got problems with the wipers on an '88 Galant: When I turn o

"speed 1" the only thing that happens is that a relay near the batter clicks. "Speeds 2 & 3" work perfectly but as soon as the wipers ar turned off they stop instantly without going to their resting position I guess there must be a missing signal. I have cleaned the contacts bu it wouldn't help. Is there a relay to send this "signal"? Has anyon got a wireing diagram on this? Or perhaps someone knows what colour o the wire that isn't working is? Any ideas would be highly appreciated

Thanks for the reply Eric. I don't think it is the switch since I ca

hear a "reaction" from the relay even when I try to use the functio that won't work. (I had the same problem on a 30 year old SAAB and tha time it was a corroded contact near the wiper motor). What makes yo think it is the switch? have you had this problem

To me it sounds like a problem with the wiper motor itself.

You can try to clean the contacts in the wiper motor, but I would just look into a new motor.

Cheers, CMF

But how could the motor be the part that doesn't work? It work

perfectly well at speeds 2 & 3. Surely there must be electricit missing in one of the wires connected to the wiper motor at som time... Or??

I'm guessing position 1 is the "intermit" setting? Also be aware that the position sensor, to stop the wipers at the bottom , is in the motor/gear assy. This signal is usually routed to the ETAC(electronic time and alarm control) and it in-turn runs the timing of the intermit function. You need a schematic....bad. Given the wipers won't park, I'd say the sensor/track inside the gearhousing is bad or dirty.

HOLD on! I looked in the factory wiring diagram.... It appears that some base model galants don't use ETACS for wipers and I don't know the trim level of yours but that's OK since the wiring at the wiper motor is almost the same.

The four wires at the motor are:

1) Blue/red - Low speed + 2) Blue/black- High speed + 3) Blue/white- Intermit Signal "changes state 12v to 0v at end wiper stroke" 4) Blue - hot wire for signal in #3 note- on ETACS cars #3 is Blue/yellow

This should help.
